Big border failure.....

I had grand visions of featuring this fabulous print as a border.... I used the same print in a few squares in the quilt.... it's pretty much all French General's
Tonight I went to see about fussy cutting and mitering - lordy bee good help me - mitering the borders.....
Yes the pics have the quilt upside down to the border print sorry but you get the idea.....
I had it all laid out and looked and went omg...... It is so overpowering for the quilt.........
Mr chookys idea was to add the cream border then the big print still my eyes are just taken away from the big star that the centre makes.....

All may not be lost as I think I may just by the skin of my teeth have enough to back the quilt instead.....
I even thought about just a cream border to make it a bit bigger but then the backing would definitely not fit.....
So thinking it will just be the star as it is.....
It's 72inchs square do you think that is big enough........
Catch you later.....
Chookyblue......

if you want to make it bigger you could still do it and just cut the back and add a strip of blocks using some of the other fabrics you used in the front I have done this a few times as long as you don't try and put the strip in the middle it is easy .I cant wait to see a bigger pic of the top looks good

It all depends on what you want to do with it...only you can decide if it's the right size....,can you still use it as bodes but narrower?

72" sounds reasonable, but I agree about adding a pieced strip to the back if you need it bigger. FG always looks good.

Oh Chooky, when you had such good plans, I'm sorry for your disappointment. 72 inches is a good size for most purposes, it sure does show off your FG's so well.

I guess I'm in the minority. I love the first picture, with just the star and the print border. And yes, you can certainly piece the back. I do it all the time. If you don't like the finished quilt, feel free to send it to me! LOL!

I'd use a dark red accent...I like the patterned float...it just needs something in between.

Glad to stop by and visit, but as I am not a quilter I would be the last person to give opinion...I will just wait for the finish and be pleasantly surprised.

I have a few quilts with no border, they look just fine. Mock up a corner with some binding and see what you think. I'm sure you'll work it out.

I absolutely love the first photo also Chooky. For me it fits the design and impression of the quilt beautifully.

The quilt will be just fine without boarders... I find it hard to have a meaning about this but a small boarder in beige or cream would be nice I think.. !! Take care and have fun !!

It's lovely... I do quite a few quilts without borders, and also with pieced backs.... I wonder what you will end up deciding to do?

Seventy two inchs is just perfect for a place at this house if you can't find one at yours lol. Anything French General is just perfect and it will be stunning no matter what you decide to do with it.

I actually like it. Obviously you would know better but you have enough contrast in the other part that the border didn't attract my eye at all.

I'm sure what ever you decide... the quilt will be beautiful...xox

Isn't it a pain when you have something planned in your mind but it all goes awry in reality! The fabric is awesome! Put it away for a day or so then look at it again with fresh eyes. You may come up swith an entirely new idea. Good luck. I think I 'll stick with Lucy lol.

Its gotta be right.
Do not attempt any decision until it hits you between the eyes.
BUt you're right . . that first idea wasnt correct :(

Diane-crewe said...

wait .. then look again .. could you do a narrow cream then a narrow patterned border? Don't make the decision when you are tired and frustrated xx

Option one frames the quilt top nicely. Options two and three take away that well defined border because the light colors in the top get lost in the light color border. Your first instinct seems to be a winner. Photos help show the difference in color value and really points out the right direction to go.

Sometimes we have good ideas… and reality won't fit in !!!
You"ll just have to reverse your quilt to have the pleasure to see your beautiful border ;)

Well I have to say I love the border and I agree with mr chooky.....small cream and then the gorgeous one. BUT! At the end of the day it's your quilt and it must make your heart sing. Hope you find a happy solution xx

Well I love the colours, especially since your nail polish matches so well LOL Good luck with your decision whatever you choose

A friend of mine says over and over that the thing she hates to see is adding yet another border just to make a quilt bigger. If it's good as it is then leave it alone. She has a good sense of style and proportion so I guess I'd say if the star is compromised by adding the borders then make an executive decision and leave it. It's trying to tell you that anyway.
