comments aaarrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Previously I have done this post on comments and word verification and it remains one of my big hit posts...................but just lately more blogs I am commenting on have word verification set on there blogs..............
now I know I am not a robot leaving spam but I'm not a miracle worker or psychic either trying to work out what some of the letters are in those stupid things........now the one below I got this morning is not too bad but others seriously I have to go again and again to get my comment to go to you..........If I wasn't wanting to comment on your blog I would have just shut the page and not left the comment..........but since blogging for me is the interaction with you with me leaving comments and receiving comments it's driving me nuts...........
Also trying to comment on blogs sometimes on my phone is very difficult with word verification...........
Now I know you are all worried about spam.........and trust me I am too BUT.........most of the spam I get is left on older posts....if you set your comments as below you will survive I promise and you may actually get a few more comments left on your blog if you turn off comment verification.......
see below settings.......
Who can comment - user with google account
Comment moderation - sometimes
                                                                   - for posts older then (5) days
Email notification requests to (insert your email address)
Show word verification - NO
SAVE YOUR CHANGES
If someone leaves you a comment after your set number of days it will be emailed to you to either publish, delete or make as spam..........
Moderated comments will not show up on your blog until you publish them............
i'll add this post to the "How to......blog bits" page
Catch you later
Chookyblue
PS I've got some sewing to show you from a non blogger who joined the party on the weekend.....
PSS CHECK YOUR SETTINGS AS SOME OF YOU HATE THIS BUT HAVE WORD VERIFICATION ON YOUR BLOG.

hear hear chooky i was only thinking that a couple of days ago how bad it is to read these damn things ,they are worse than ever to read,i find the numbers easy to read ,but when you comment you dont know whether it will be words or numbers that you have to use, they are a pain in the bum.xx

Word verification is frustrating. I look at it as the only online game I play. Doesn't make it any more fun though.
I moderate my comments so I figure verification isn't necessary for me. I stopped getting spam when I stopped allowing anonymous comments.

I moderate the comments on my blog and if a blog has word verification and I don't get it on the first go I don't leave a comment.

I had one today and I swear there was nothing on it but a blur.... ridiculous...

I agree!! I look at blogs on my phone and can't see the numbers. Thanks for writing this post and spreading the word. I very very rarely get spam comments and I figure it takes me less time to delete them than it takes to figure out those robot words.

I'm glad I'm not the only one it drives nuts. I hope your message gets out there.

I agree, we all need to encourage people to take word verification off their blogs

Jewells said...

Yes I agree...pain in the provervable when you have to retype numbers and letters over and over!

I agree it is frustrating..especially if you don't see the word verification bit and spend time wondering why the comment hasn't posted..

Got to say hate the word verification. Hope after saying that it is turned off on my blog, I thought I did it so long ago that I have forgotten about it. I have pretty much given up commenting on those blogs that have it because I am usually on my iPad or phone and it is impossible using those devices if word verification is on. Thank you for educating the masses

sometimes I think ONLY a robot could read some of these!! I got one the other day that had a BLANK box!! 3 times!! I gave up after that

Susan said...

I'm with you - though at least the numbers are easier than the alpha characters..but if I cant comment within a few tries I usually give up.

I'm with you Chookyblue. I actually groan when I see word verification. I hate it. If I have to click several times to get something readable I just don't bother commenting. Hugs, xx

I didn't even realize I was one of them!!! Thanks for the tutorial and I changed mine to NO. I hated them too. And didn't realize I was a culprit!

Thanks for posting this. Word verification is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to blogging...it's just so frustrating!

I hear ya -- the word verification has been driving. me. crazy. the last few days. Why Oh Why must people use it???? I've been getting more and more that look like the one in your example -- I think it's an error. Usually it will show a string of practically unreadable characters and then a picture with numbers like on your example. If you get a picture, you can type any ol' damn thing in there -- the computer can't compare characters to a picture so it will let anything through. The problem in your example is that the string isn't visible, so you can't see it, so the computer can't compare what you can't type to the string it's not showing you. I know I'm babbling and it probably doesn't make sense, but suffice it to say that word verification has been DORKED up lately. It's a HUGE PIA!!! ;-DDD

Hear! Hear!! Agreed.

I wish more people would eliminate the verification thing too. I wish more bloggers would also list their email so that I can respond easier....thanks for posting the info. I am sure it will help.

If you choose Google accts only does that not allow others with different blog platforms to post? I hate those blasted word verifications, and do not use them. I do have 1 post in particular that's over a year old that seems to get a lot of spam.

Hallelujah!! I don't comment a lot of the time because it is so painful to do so, esp as I view from my phone a lot & commenting with word verification is a nightmare on my phone. Let's hope some bloggers ditch it.

Maria said...

Hate it..... Like you Chooky will only leave a comment IF I really want to.

I agree with you about those things you have to press a go-zillion times till you can understand it so your comment can be posted. I moderate mine so it might be easier for others.

I completely agree and I have not put word verification on my blog. I have given up in some cases when I either can not fathom what I am suppose to be typing or I click comment and the darn thing freezes due to me taking too much time over the word verification bit.
I have moderation on my to stop spam publishing and then just delete them from the comment in box.

Im hearing you. I get frustrated and cancel my comment sometimes because I cant read or get the right combination.

Gayle said...

Thanks ChookyBlue, I have been getting a bit of spam lately so I have put moderation on but hate word verification and would never use it.

Susie said...

Thanks for the reinforcement Chooky. Just rechecked mine!! I still remember you posting this ages ago and that is how I knew to change mine - so thank you.

Frederika said...

? Thanks i will try. But i just got so many strange email lately.

Thanks for you post :-)
I have taken my word verification off several years ago and have moderation on older posts, and I as good as never have any spam anymore. I can often not be bothered to try to dechifer the crazy word verification codes and often leave a blog without a comment if I have to bang my head through walls to be able to say something nice. Life is to short ;-) Happy sewing to you Donna :-)

Totally agree.....sometimes it takes me so long to comment....I thought I was the only one who had a problem with this....x

Finally, I thought it was normal for this but couldn't work out why some comments asked for this and some didn't. Thanks chookyblue I will check mine.

Thank you Chookyblue - I was just told a couple of weeks ago I had the verification thingy on my blog - I didn't know it was there!! Now my mission is to get rid of it!!

Yes i agree it is very frustrating when u try two or three times to decide and sometimes you give up with frustration and end up sending an email. Gee i hope my blog doesnt have that "annoyance" on it.

Yep, changed mine to NO. Thanks for sharing!
